The Journey
By Mary Oliver
One day you finally knew what you had to do and began,
though the voices around you
kept shouting their bad advice—
though the whole house
began to tremble
and you felt the old tug
at your ankles.
“Mend my life!”
each voice cried.
But you didn’t stop.
You knew what you had to do,
though the wind pried
with its stiff fingers
at the very foundations—
though their melancholy
was terrible.
It was already late enough,
and a wild night,
and the road full of fallen
branches and stones.
But little by little,
as you left their voices behind,
the stars began to burn
through the sheets of clouds,
and there was a new voice,
which you slowly
recognized as your own,
that kept you company
as you strode deeper and deeper
into the world,
determined to do
the only thing you could do—
determined to save
the only life you could save.
How appropriate!!!
ReplyDeleteIf this is a book I want to read it! Sometimes I wonder if it would just be best if we say one day "This is the first day of the rest of my life" and start from there and become the woman we want to be. Do you think that is possible?
ReplyDeleteI am totally on that path, I am trying new things (getting chickens and a trailer just this year alone!), getting in touch with who I could have been were circumstances different in my childhood. I think I should be one spunky gal and I want to be everything I can be!
ReplyDeleteSorry it is not a book but I bet the author of this poem has a book somewhere! She was in last month's Oprah.
What a beautiful poem, Karen. Don't you know, you are already one spunky gal? A beautiful spunky gal! Deserving of all her heart desires! Happy Birthday Monday!!!! Luv ya!
