Blankets for Simonga Village

After my trip to Africa I felt a strong need to do something for Simonga Village in Livingstone, Zambia. It is a beautiful little village that I had the fortunate chance to visit and I saw children without toys and with only crude blankets. Some were making 'tents' in their 'backyard' to play in with only rags. It took me back to the days when I did the very thing with my brothers in my own backyard but we were fortunate to have real blankets. My goal had been to make quilts, but my friend Sharon came up with the idea of using fleece and this is what we did last week. We got 12 'blankies' done for kids in the age range of newborn to ten. I know this is a drop in the bucket so with fabric sample donations from my local Ben Franklin (thanks, Mim) I do plan on making some quilts. It will take some time and since this is summer down there I do have a little time.
Thanks for the pictures and all the help, Sharon.

  1. Oh Karen, I will go through my stash and bring some fabrics over on Friday...hope you will be able to use them for the kids quilts.
    What a great idea.
